WHSFL playoffs wrapping up

The playoff field narrowed at the end of October for schools vying for Winnipeg High School Football League titles, with a pair of championship matches held this past weekend.

On Oct. 29, the Crocus Plains Plainsmen and the Sturgeon Heights Huskies faced-off in the AAAA Tier 1 consolation final, with the Plainsmen coming out on top 30-12 in Brandon, Man.

The Oak Park Raiders won the 12-player junior varsity championship on Oct. 29, defeating Dakota Lancers 48-21.

Meanwhile, the nine-player junior varsity semifinals were held on Oct. 29, with Miles Macdonell Buckeyes defeating Crocus Plains Plainsmen 32-13 and the Grant Park Pirates defeating the Vincent Massey Vikings 20-6. The championship game between Miles Mac and Grant Park will be held on Nov. 5 at 4:30 p.m. at Princess Auto Stadium.

In AAA action, on Oct. 30, the St. Norbert Celtics beat the Churchill Bulldogs 17-14 in one semifinal match, while Fort Frances lost to Dryden 31-24 in the second. The AAA final between St. Norbert and Dryden will take place on Nov. 5.

In AAAA Tier 1 action, the St. Paul’s Crusaders took on the Dakota Lancers in one semifinal, while the Oak Park Raiders faced the Vincent Massey Trojans in the other on Oct. 31. Results were not available at press time.

In AAAA Tier 2, the West Kildonan Wolverines and the Springfield Sabres played in one semifinal match on Oct. 30, while the league cancelled the game between the Elmwood Giants and the Tec Voc Hornets following the death of Darius Hartshorne, a Grade 12 lineman from Sisler who sustained a serious spinal injury on Oct. 17 after an awkward collision in a game against Tec Voc.

The winners will square off on Nov. 6 in the finals for both AAAA Tier 1 and 2 at Princess Auto Stadium.
