Spring beginnings and fresh hope

Spring is when the city exhales. Sidewalk chalk returns, bikes emerge from basements, and neighbours linger a little longer at the end of the driveway. Across our riding, this season also brings spiritual renewal; Ramadan iftars, Easter services and egg hunts, Passover seders, moments of hospitality where a simple invitation can turn strangers into friends.
This is the perfect time to tend the places we share. Along the Seine and in Whittier Park, a pair of gloves and a compost bag can turn an hour’s walk into a litter free path. Community gardens are opening plots; little libraries need a refresh of kids’ books; youth teams are recruiting volunteer coaches; seniors’ centres welcome friendly callers for weekly check ins. If you’ve been wondering how to help, consider this your sign.
There’s practical renewal, too. Especially for household budgets. The first federal tax bracket is now 14 per cent, down from 15 per cent. Because the change began mid year in 2025, many will see the savings when they file this spring: up to $420 per person or $840 for a two income family, with most relief going to people in the lowest two brackets.

To help with everyday costs, the former GST/HST credit has been strengthened as the Canada Groceries & Essentials Benefit: a one time top up this spring equal to 50 per cent of your 2025-26 GST credit, followed by a 25 per cent boost to quarterly payments starting in July 2026. A family of four could see up to $1,890 over the July-to-June benefit year; a single adult up to $950. If you’re eligible for the GST credit, there’s nothing to apply for – just file your 2024 return.
Families with kids will also see help through indexation of the Canada Child Benefit (CCB). Beginning July 2026, the base annual amounts rise to about $8,157 per child under 6 and $6,883 per child aged 6-17 (actual payments depend on income). Filing on time keeps your July recalculation on track.
I’ll keep doing my part to connect federal programs with local needs, but I know this truth – the most important work happens on our blocks, at our kitchen tables, and in our parks. As always, my constituency office is here to help – whether it’s pointing you to a community tax clinic, walking you through forms, or connecting you with neighbourhood resources. Drop us a line; we’ll get you to the right door.
However you mark the season – at an iftar, Easter event, or with a backyard barbecue – may it bring light, fresh starts, and the joy of seeing one another again.
Eid Mubarak, Joyeuses Pâques, and happy spring!
