Major roadwork underway on Corydon between Shaftesbury, Kenaston

A major road renewal project on Corydon Avenue, between Shaftesbury and Kenaston, is now underway.

The $7.5 million project, funded jointly by all three levels of government, includes roadway improvements, new active transportation pathways, Transit stop upgrades, and upgraded sewer and water infrastructure.

Work is expected to continue until later this year.

Upgrade announced for St. James Collegiate running track

On June 4, the St. James-Assiniboia School Division and the City of Winnipeg announced funding to upgrade the 400-metre running track at St. James Collegiate (1900 Portage Ave.).

The $800,000 project is set to take place in the summer of 2027, as the City of Winnipeg is currently performing sewage pipe tunnelling work underneath the track. According to the SJASD, the asphalt base of the track will be rebuilt, with layer of rubber applied to the new surface in order to create a faster and safer running surface.

Funding for the project comes from the SJASD ($200,000, ward funds from Coun. Shawn Dobson (St. James) ($300,000) and Coun. Brian Mayes (St. Vital) ($208,000), and surplus funds from the Memorial Park (St. Vital) project of 2020 ($92,000). This is the seventh outdoor track rubberization project the city has undertaken, in conjunction with local councillors and school divisions, since 2018.

Book, bake sale to support literacy for incarcerated Manitobans on June 13

On Saturday, June 13, Prison Libraries Committee and the Bar None Prison Visiting Rideshare will hold a book and bake sale to raise funds, books, and awareness for incarcerated people in Manitoba.

“Prison libraries provide far more than just leisure books,” PLC chair Ashley Huot said in a statement. “Incarcerated people need access to all sorts of information related to legal processes, health, and information to support their educational goals and plans for release.”

“Maintaining connections between prisoners and their communities on the outside is valuable abolitionist work,” Rowan Moyes, who volunteers with Bar None Prison Rideshare, added.

In 2025, the sale raised nearly $7,000 to be split between the two organizations. This year’s sale runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at First Mennonite Church (922 Notre Dame Ave.).
