Myrna Driedger, Progressive Conservative candidate for Roblin, is a political veteran with this being her seventh election campaign.

“I’m now the most senior MLA,” Driedger, a long-time Charleswood resident, said. She and her husband have two adult sons and an infant grand-daughter.

Growing up in Benito, near Swan River, Driedger’s father was an elevator agent, her mother a hair stylist. She graduated from high school in Swan River, then trained as a nurse at Winnipeg General Hospital.

Driedger said she worked as a nurse for 23 years in a number of health care settings, but mainly at Health Sciences Centre. She believes that this experience gives her an understanding of health care issues, community assessment policy evaluation and critical thinking skills.
She then spent 12 years heading Child Find Manitoba, the precursor to the Canadian Centre for Child Protection. There, she dealt with social issues involving children such as child exploitation, abuse and violence, and interacted with government, legal and law enforcement officials.
Asked by The Headliner why she wants to remain in politics, Driedger replied, “I just love this job. I still have lots of energy, enthusiasm.”

For the past three years, she served as Speaker of the Legislature, and said she tried to foster an atmosphere of mutual respect. “I don’t have a problem being fair and non-partisan.”
Driedger said she takes the role of advocate for her constituents seriously, and looks forward to including RM of Headingley residents in her jurisdiction.

She is especially proud of the work she’s done to help set up the Charleswood 55+ Active Living Centre and supporting other community groups such as the Rotary Club.

She’s already started door-knocking in Headingley and some of the new neighbourhoods in Charleswood, but will also seek the support of all voters within Roblin.

“People know me. They know what they can expect from me,” she said.

Also running in Roblin are Green Party candidate Kevin Nichols and Sophie Brandt Murenzi for the NDP. No Liberal Party candidate had been nominated at press time.
