Folklorama anniversary celebration kicks off
The 50th edition of Winnipeg’s celebration of multiculturalism and diversity begins on Aug. 4.
Folklorama will host 45 pavilions across the city for its golden anniversary.
“There’s nothing like Folklorama in the world and I can’t imagine Winnipeg without it,” Folklorama president Stan Hall said in a statement. “Folklorama’s success is because of our tireless volunteers, dedicated staff, supportive sponsors and the unwavering commitment of our performers and ambassadors. It’s because of them that Folklorama will exist for another 50 years!”
Week one pavilions (Aug. 4 to 10) happening in southwest Winnipeg include:
• Israel Pavilion – Shalom Square, Asper Jewish Community Campus, 123 Doncaster St.;
• Pabellon de Espana – Spain Pavilion, St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2255 Grant Ave.;
• Argentina “Tango”Pavilion, Centro Caboto Centre, 1055 Wilkes Ave.;
• Spirit of Ukraine Pavilion, Soul Sanctuary Church, 2050 Chevrier Blvd.;
• Egyptian Pavilion, University of Manitoba, 210-224 University Centre, 66 Chancellors Cir.; and
• Korean Pavilion, Masonic Memorial Temple, 420 Corydon Ave.
Week two pavilions (Aug. 11 to 17) happening in southwest Winnipeg include:
• Pavilion of Scotland, St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2255 Grant Ave.;
• Italian Pavilion, Centro Caboto Centre, 1055 Wilkes Ave.;
• Africa/Caribbean Pavilion, Grant Park High School, 450 Nathaniel St.; and
• Irish Pavilion, Soul Sanctuary Church, 2050 Chevrier Blvd.

Beer back on tap at Assiniboine Park Zoo
Assiniboine Park Zoo’s craft beer night is returning in September.
The now annual Brew at the Zoo event happens Fri., Sept. 13. According to organizers, the adults-only evening features samples from craft breweries, live music, and food trucks. There will also be a selection of booths sampling wine, cider and spirits.
Tickets for Brew at the Zoo go on sale Aug. 2 at 10 a.m. Tickets start at $45 + GST and include all samples and live music. A limited number of premium tickets will also be available for $65+ GST and include early event entry at 6 p.m., a food voucher, and a complimentary ticket to return to Assiniboine Park Zoo.
Designated driver tickets are also available for $25 + GST. Food will also be available for purchase.
Organizers say attendees can expect more booths as well as an expanded footprint within the Zoo.
Assiniboine Park Zoo will close at 1:00 p.m. on Sept. 13 to set up for the event.

Edna Nabess carrying PC banner in Fort Rouge
The Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba has formally announced its candidate in the riding of Fort Rouge.
Entrepreneur and business owner Edna Nabess will be running against incumbent MLA and NDP leader Wab Kinew.
Edna is the founder and principal designer of Cree-Ations. She also has board experience, currently sitting on the Winnipeg Police Board, Efficiency Manitoba, Manitoba Public Insurance, and Manitoba 150 Celebration Committee.
“I have always advocated to support women and their families, and I want to continue to make a difference in our community, especially for those who are experiencing similar circumstances that I faced while raising my children on my own,” Nabess said in a statement. “I want to be part of a team that will help build a better Manitoba for the next generation.”
Nabess has five children and 12 grandchildren.
Other candidates in Fort Rouge include James Beddome (Green) and Cyndy Friesen (Lib.). The provincial election is Sept. 10.
