And so it begins

Summer doesn’t officially start until the summer solstice — the point at which the northern hemisphere is closest to the sun. This year’s solstice will occur at precisely 9:41 p.m. CDT next Friday, June 20 — the longest day and shortest night of the year.

For me, however, Winnipeg’s summer festival season is officially launched by the start of the Red River Ex, which opens this Friday, June 13 at Red River Exhibition Park, just west of the city. For 10 days, the Ex will be home to all the rides, midway games, smells and noise that captivated me when I was young, and the Ex was held in and around the old Winnipeg Stadium and Arena complex at Polo Park.

After the Ex, the summertime events come thick and fast — the Winnipeg International Jazz Festival kicks off on Tuesday, June 17; Indigenous Peoples Day will be celebrated across Canada on June 21; the new (and very much anticipated) Village Music Fest will take over Osborne Village on June 27 and 28; there will be a variety of Canada Day celebrations around Winnipeg on July 1, including large gatherings at The Forks, Assiniboine Park and Princess Auto Stadium, and a host of smaller gatherings around the city. The weekend of July 9-13 marks the 50th Winnipeg Folk Festival; followed by the Fringe Festival from July 16 to 27 and Folklorama from Aug. 3 to 16.

Add in all the other music, cultural and community festivals around the province and there will be no shortage of things for us to do this summer.

I’ll do my best to keep you informed of all that’s coming with this newsletter and these event listings every Monday.

One of the purposes of Community Calendar is to offer a select list of upcoming events and to encourage people to submit their events listings to our online events page.

To submit your listings, click on the Events listings tab in the menu bar at www.fpcommunityreview.com

If you would like to submit an event and want to bypass all the key-pressing, you can do it here and if you simply want to see what’s going on around town, you can do so here

Enjoy the week! I’ll be back in your inboxes on Monday, June 16.
