Back in the saddle…

I’m not Steven Tallarico (a.k.a. Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler) but I hope you’ll forgive me if you catch me trying to approximate his gargled-with-razorblades screech:

“I’m baaaaack! I’m back in the saddle again!”

Regular readers of this newsletter will know that I signed off on April 21 with the news I was about to take a medical leave of absence, and I’m happy to report that all went well. The surgical procedure was straightforward, my recovery has been excellent and I’m pleased to be out and about, building strength and feeling better every day.

That said, I also enjoyed the downtime. I mean… recovery from surgery is never really a ‘holiday’ but it does leave one with a lot of hours to fill, and I think I did pretty good job of it.

Once I got through the first few days of discomfort, I settled into a routine that involved getting up at a civilized hour, putting on my new noise-cancelling headphones and listening to music while I read the newspaper and all the various newsletters I receive. On weekday afternoons I would read or do crossword puzzles and watch soccer games from Europe (my convalescence overlapped with the business end of most competitions). The NHL playoffs, which featured up to four games a night during the first round and two per night during the second round, were on my TV every evening (even if I was only keeping an eye on scores while doing something else). As most of you will attest, the Winnipeg Jets’ all-too-brief playoff run touched almost every emotion — and I was happy to attend game 5 of their second-round series against the Dallas Stars (the good guys won, 4-0).

I also found time to plow through several detective/thriller novels by Charles Beaumont, Micheal Connelly, Val McDermid, Adrian McKinty and John Sandford, and I’m currently in the middle of British author Stephen Miller’s 2008 biography of Kris Kristofferson, titled Kristofferson: The Wild American. I watched a lot of drama on TV, too – including the last season of Bosch: Legacy, season 2 of The Last of Us, and the third season of Dark Winds – and I also screened several excellent movies, including Winter’s Bone (the stark 2010 film which introduced Jennifer Lawrence to the world) and a fascinating story of news photographers during South Africa’s struggle for apartheid called The Bang-Bang Club.

Despite all that, I did find myself getting antsy in my last week of leave, champing at the bit to get back to work again. So I’m happy to once again provide you with this weekly list of events and goings-on around town.

Enjoy the week! I’ll be back in your inboxes on June 9.
