Heho! Let’s go…

I’m hosting a family dinner this coming weekend, but one of my sons and his girlfriend politely declined the invitation last week.

“We have Festival du Voyageur tickets that day,” he said. “It’ll be my first time attending as an adult, and we’re going with a group of friends.”

Tourism Winnipeg — The entertainment tents in Voyageur Park are a big draw during Festival du Voyageur, which runs this year from Feb. 12 to 23.

I was disappointed, but I get it. Winnipeg’s annual winter carnival, which runs from Feb. 14 through 23 this year, is a must-attend event for many young Winnipeggers, who love the fact most of the festival’s entertainment activities are now centrally located at Parc du Voyageur (Whittier Park). When I was my kids’ age, events took place at a collection of trading posts (or ‘relais’) around St. Boniface, and it was sometimes a logistical challenge to hop from place to place to place. There are still at least three relais and other satellite stages, but nowadays, large, heated tents in Parc du Voyageur play host to live entertainment throughout the 10-day festival, featuring French and English performers from across all genres, and offering many local musicians the opportunity to earn new fans.

The Centre culturel franco-manitobain, at the junction of Provencher Boulevard and Des Meurons Street, is the festival’s other main hub, serving as Relais du Voyageur throughout the event, and it will play host to concerts by the likes of T’Monde and Andrina Turenne, Jill Barber and Leif Vollebekk next weekend. Le Patio 340, which is also on the premises, will play host to late-evening Après Fest shows.

If you’re so inclined, Festival du Voyageur offers a feast of music, so I hope you get out and enjoy some of it. Heho!

Next Monday, Feb. 17 is Louis Riel Day, so this newsletter will be taking a break. I’ll be back in your inboxes on Feb. 24.
