Here we go again…

Standing in an interminably long supermarket checkout line on Sunday afternoon, I realized that today was the day most families returned to their regular routines and many people returned to work after a restful couple of weeks enjoying the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

I didn’t take much time off — just the statutory days and a couple others — but the way the holidays fell in midweek meant I spent more time away from the office than in it over the past fortnight, so I was rested and happy when I settled at my desk this morning, only to realize it will be six long weeks before we can enjoy our next stat holiday — which is Louis Riel Day on Feb. 17.

It was enough to darken my mood until I looked at the calendar of upcoming local events and was reminded that Winnipeggers go out of their way to animate and celebrate these cold months. This is a winter city, after all.

At The Forks, for example, the Nestaweya River Trail is already open to skaters, from the port all the way to the Donald Street bridge on the Assiniboine River, and trail crews are now working on expanding it onto the Red River, too. The Nordic Centre at Windsor Park Golf Course is also now open for cross-country skiing enthusiasts and, if the posts in my Instagram feed are any indication, people have eagerly taken the opportunity, despite the current cold, to get out and get active.

In the world of arts and culture, the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre opens Waitress, its latest mainstage musical, on Tuesday, Jan. 7, and the Rady Jewish Community Centre kicks off its annual Music ’N’ Mavens series of concerts and lectures with a show by Sheena Rattai on the same day.

On the horizon, Winterruption, a winter music festival presented by the folks at the West End Cultural Centre and Real Love Winnipeg is set to run from Jan. 22 to 26, and the 34th annual Winnipeg New Music Festival will begin on Jan. 21. Once we get through those celebrations, it will be time for Festival du Voyageur, which runs Feb. 14 to 23, and spring is sure to be just around the corner. Honest.

One of the purposes of Community Calendar is to offer a select list of upcoming events and to encourage people to submit their events listings to our online events page.

To submit your listings, click on the Events listings tab in the menu bar at www.fpcommunityreview.com

If you would like to submit an event and want to bypass all the key-pressing, you can do it here and if you simply want to see what’s going on around town, you can do so here

I’ll be back in your inboxes on Monday, Jan. 13. Until then, enjoy the week!
