Just for one day

As much as I enjoy the humour of Bill Burr, I loved being able to get out of the city Saturday, while nearly 9,500 people attended the American comic’s show at the Great Outdoors Festival in Assiniboine Park. I would have had fun at the gig, but my northern European constitution doesn’t fare too well in heat and humidity. So, we made the call to head up to Hillside Beach on the east side of Lake Winnipeg.

Hillside is hallowed ground for the Kendle family. My parents first rented a lakefront cottage there in the summer of 1973 and they went back every summer for more than 20 years. I have vivid memories of endless, sunny summer days and long walks along the beach to the channel that separates Hillside and its lagoon from Victoria Beach. Even stormy, rainy days were fun back then — every East Beaches kid knows that a ‘wave day’ on Lake Winnipeg is as good as it gets. When it was too cold and windy for wave-jumping, I’d delve into the box of library books we always brought with us, or become embroiled in a day-long game of Risk with the sons of the family friends who usually rented the cottage right behind ours on Belfast Road.

Those boys were actually the reason I drove up to Hillside with my partner and my brother on Saturday. When the retired schoolteacher who owned those cottages died in the 1990s, her estate sold the properties, and my parents began renting just down the road at Lester Beach. However, when the lakefront lot came back on the market in 2009, the brothers pooled their money to buy it and built a new cottage, turning it once again into a summertime hub for both families — and it just so happened they were both at Hillside this past weekend.

So, Saturday was a good day at the beach. I spent a half-hour or so cooling off in the lake after the drive up Hwy. 59, we cooked a big meal, shared news and gossip, discussed U.S. politics and enjoyed a sunset walk with our dogs.

It was a great reminder that, in the middle of Winnipeg’s busy festival season, with the Fringe in full swing and Folklorama just around the corner, many of us forget that we live just one or two hours away from some of the best lakes and beaches in Canada.

It’s good to get out of the city — even just for one day.
