Spring has sprung…

In Manitoba, the beginning of spring traditionally means that the high school basketball and hockey seasons come to an end.

Last week, the Vincent Massey Trojans captured the provincial AAAA boys hockey championship, with a 3-2 win over the River East Kodiaks, while the Collège Jeanne-Sauvé Olympiens won the Division 1 championship of the Manitoba Women’s High School Hockey League with a two-games-to-one series victory over the Glenlawn Lions. The Olympiens defeated the Lions 2-0 in the third and deciding game on Friday, March 21.

Brook Jones / Free Press – Payton Durand (in white) of the College Jeanne-Sauve Olympiens scored the winning goal for her team in the third and final game of the MWHSHL Division 1 final on Friday, March 21.

The junior varsity and varsity basketball seasons also came to an end last week, with champions declared on the boys and girls sides of the A/AA, AAA and AAAA junior varsity categories; as well as the boys and girls sides of the varsity A/AA and AAA classifications. The AAAA boys and girls varsity finals are being played tonight at the University of Manitoba’s Investors Group Athletic Centre, with the Dakota Lancers taking on the Vincent Massey Trojans in the girls final, and Dakota’s boys team taking on the Kildonan East Reivers.

That’s where I’m heading as soon as I finish writing this message — and why I’m being rather brief. In the meantime, you can plan the rest of your week with our event listings below. Have a great week, and I’ll be back in your inboxes on Monday, March 31.

One of the purposes of Community Calendar is to offer a select list of upcoming events and to encourage people to submit their events listings to our online events page.

To submit your listings, click on the Events listings tab in the menu bar at www.fpcommunityreview.com

If you would like to submit an event and want to bypass all the key-pressing, you can do it here and if you simply want to see what’s going on around town, you can do so here
