Sweet Grammy relief

Like many Canadians, I spent more time than I care to admit reading the labels of items at the grocery store and in our cupboards on the weekend, confirming the origin of products and foods we regularly buy, then figuring out Canadian-produced alternatives for those things that come from the U.S.A.

Annoying, to say the least, but I found solace in the realization that I wasn’t alone – the mood on my social media feeds was palpably agitated, even angry.

Still, it was comforting to sit on the couch last night to watch the live, prime-time 67th Grammy Awards show. Music is escape, solace and inspiration for me and countless others, and big awards shows such as the Grammys afford us all an opportunity to gawk and gossip and to watch live performances and, if we’re lucky, to be moved and stimulated.

Wikimedia Commons – Charlie XCX’s performance of Von Dutch and Guess at the Grammy Awards Sunday brought a welcome sense of bratty fun to the proceedings.

So there I sat, working on (nerd alert) the big weekend crosswords in the Free Press and watching the winners and performers roll by. Overall, the show was mostly ‘meh’ — there was no single galvanizing moment — but I was impressed by the live performances of rapper Doechii, queer pop queen Chappell Roan and the ‘brat’ herself, Charlie XCX. I was also happy to see the Recording Academy diss the Country Music Awards by naming Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter the country recording of the year and album of the year, and I was especially moved by the acceptance speeches of Doechii (who won best rap recording), Chappell Roan, Lady Gaga and Alicia Keys, who was honoured for her global impact and took the opportunity to passionately and articulately point out that now, more than ever, is a time for people to stick together.

I’m not a praying man but… amen, sister.

I’ll be back in your inboxes on Monday, Feb. 10. Enjoy the week!
