When Irish eyes are smiling

“When Irish eyes are smiling,
Sure it’s like a morn in Spring,
In the lilt of Irish laughter
You can hear the angels sing.”
Lyrics by Chauncey Olcott and George Graff, Jr.; music composed by Ernest Ball, 1912

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all. ’Tis the traditional celebration day of St. Patrick, the foremost patron saint of Ireland – a day of religious celebration for some, as well as a day for more secular cultural traditions and activities, such as wearing green, drinking stout ale and taking part in St. Patrick’s Day parades and parties.

Given that March 17 is a Monday this year, many local celebrations took place over the weekend. Winnipeg’s St. Patrick’s Day parade was on Saturday, March 15, for example, but several pubs and clubs are holding St. Patrick’s Day parties tonight. Two of the largest are at Irish Club on Erin Street and at the CCFM on Provencher Boulevard. You can find out more in the event listings below.

While I’m at it, I should also wish you all a happy spring, as this year’s vernal equinox, which marks the official start of the season, will occur at 4:01 a.m. central daylight time on Thursday, March 20.
