Royal Winnipeg Ballet winds up 74th season; Jazz Winnipeg revs up Guitarama 2

Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet closes out its 74th season with Mixed Programme, a trio of dances meant to highlight the past, present and future of the company as it heads into its 75th season.

All three works in the evening will be Winnipeg premieres and will include: The Four Seasons, a choreographic interpretation of Vivaldi’s four violin concertos by National Ballet of Canada artist-in-residence James Kudelka; Défilè, by Jorden Morris, will feature dancers from the RWB Company as well as the RWB School; and The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude, by William Forsythe, will feature dancers from the current company in a fast-paced exploration of classical technique and footwork.

(Big hint: some of the RWB’s exalted stars of the past will be making appearances — including Evelyn Hart, Caroline Gruber, John Kaminski and Alexander Gamayunov.)
Showtimes for Mixed Programme are May 7, 8, 9 and 10 at 7:30 p.m., with a 2 p.m. matinee on May 11.

Last year, Jazz Winnipeg put together a show called Guitarama as part of its Nu Sounds concert series. It proved so popular that it’s back again this year.

Guitarama 2 goes this Fri., May 9 at the Park Theatre (698 Osborne St.). Icelandic guitar virtuoso Björn Thoroddsen, a world-renowned player who has been no stranger to Winnipeg in the past 15 years, has picked five local players to show off their six-string abilities.

They are: Barry G. Player; Tim Butler; Chet Breau; Marco Castillo; and Mike Siwickis.
All performers will be accompanied by bassist Gilles Fournier and drummer Eric Platz.

Advance tickets for the 7:30 p.m. show are $15 and can be purchased at jazzwinnipeg.com, 204-989-4656, or in-person at 7-100 Arthur St. or at the Park Theatre.

They’ll cost you $20 at the door on the night of the show.
