As you read this, hundreds of Winnipeg workplaces are engaged in, or have completed, an annual United Way Winnipeg workplace fundraising campaign.

A workplace campaign is an opportunity for people to give to the Community Fund that helps thousands of Winnipeggers every day through United Way partners, programs and services. But if you’ve experienced a workplace campaign you know it is much more than that.

Pride, employee engagement, and loads of fun are also part of a workplace campaign. Beyond donating to help Winnipeggers — something often done with an easy payroll deduction — workplace campaigns can include events that bring coworkers together. Carnivals, talent shows, casual dress days and office Olympics are common campaign sites.

Food is also part of most campaigns in the form of chili cook-offs, potluck lunches, coffee/cookie carts, cupcake wars or just the good old-fashioned, tried-and-true barbecues.

Campaigns can also engage employees through a United Way Day of Caring to help a social agency or non-profit with a little sweat equity to complete small jobs, or a drive to collect much-needed items like clothes or hygiene products that can make life brighter for agency clients.

A visit to a United Way agency to learn about the critical work happening on the frontlines is an incredible learning experience, and most workplaces invite a United Way speaker to share their personal stories connected to United Way agencies and programs supported by Winnipeggers’ generosity.

Workplace campaigns foster a sense of connection with your community and a culture of giving back. And they’re not hard to make happen. The person, or committee, organizing the campaign at a workplace have all the help and support they need from United Way representatives loaned to United Way from generous workplaces during the fall campaign period.
