If you feel ripped off or scammed, you likely know you can turn to the Better Business Bureau (BBB) to help you resolve your dispute.

But where can you go to identify current scams? To learn how to shop safely? To accredit your business and build its reputation? The BBB offers all these services and much more. They’re here for both consumers and business owners working to build a trustworthy marketplace.

Their services are mostly free but many still don’t know the full extent of how the BBB can help them. To address this, the BBB offers free presentations to senior groups, senior living centres, business organizations, student associations, immigrant agencies and other community groups. They tell people exactly how the BBB’s services can help them with their unique needs and how they can access those resources.

The BBB is bridging the gap between need and information, showing people exactly what they can do when faced with any of a variety of challenges. This knowledge is especially valuable to those who are at an economic disadvantage, and who may not have the resources to find the BBB without outreach.

“The BBB wants to ensure that everyone can access our resources so that they, too, can find equality in the marketplace. No one should be left feeling helpless if they are treated dishonestly. The BBB has a vast network of resources that can help people in their day-to-day lives,” said Len Andrusiak, president and CEO of the BBB serving Manitoba and Northwest Ontario.

The presentations are actual face-to-face interactions, so people don’t have to waste their time navigating a website, or waiting on hold. In-person presenters can answer all the questions people have and relate to their specific circumstances. It sets them up for success not only for their current issues, but also shows them how they can use the BBB effectively in the future.

The presentations also teach people about the BBB Foundation’s ethical education programs, like LIFT. LIFT is a course that shows people how to make ethical decisions when the right answer isn’t so clear. It teaches them to LIFT themselves and others to higher standards. People who attend the BBB presentations can learn more about LIFT and see if it’s something they’d like to enrol in.
