The idea made too much sense.

When CJNU 93.7FM first approached Canstar Community News about working together, it occurred to all of us that this would be a natural fit.

After all, CJNU is a community radio station, operated by the Nostalgia Broadcasting Cooperative, which aims to not only play music that its listening audience will enjoy but also to highlight the news, events and people that bring Winnipeggers together and get them talking.

At Canstar, our six weekly newspapers – The Headliner, The Herald, The Lance, The Metro, The Sou’wester and The Times – may not play music, but we certainly pride ourselves on telling you about what you and your neighbours do with, to and for each other.

And so it is that at noon this Fri., March 5, I will make the first of what will be regular guest appearances by Canstar reporters and editors on Community Café, the weekly news-magazine program hosted by CJNU station manager Adam Glynn.

I’m the inaugural guest because Adam wants me to introduce myself and the papers to the CJNU audience. I will be followed in quick succession by my colleagues Sheldon Birnie of The Herald; Sydney Hildebrandt of The Times; Susie Strachan of The Sou’wester; Gabrielle Piché of The Headliner; and Simon Fuller of The Lance.

We’re all excited by the opportunity to tell CJNU 93.7FM listeners about what’s going on in their neighbourhoods, their towns, their municipalities and their city. We hope that our readers will also take the time to tune in.

“There is so much we have in common,” Glynn said of this new partnership. “We both exist to serve our community in a hyper-local way – something of great importance in today’s modern media landscape.

“I’m very proud that two locally-owned, independent and like-minded organizations can come together to share our platforms and amplify our storytelling for our discerning readers and listeners.”
I’m proud, too, Adam.

And we can’t wait to join you on Community Café on Fridays at noon on CJNU 93.7FM.
