Tombstone Territorial Park is a stunning locale located in the heart of the Yukon. Named after the Tombstone mountain range, it is characterized by rugged terrain and jagged alpine peaks which resemble tombstones.
Established in 1999, the park covers approximately 2,200 square kilometres, with elevations ranging from 800 to 2,000 metres. It is a mix of alpine tundra, subalpine forests, and u-shaped valleys, cirques, and moraines, making for incredibly picturesque scenes. Its most striking features are the glaciated mountains – including the iconic Tombstone Mountain, which rises dramatically above the surrounding landscape.
The unique geological formations found here are the result of millions of years of tectonic activity, erosion, and sedimentation, and make for a visually striking and diverse environment. The formations are primarily sedimentary rocks, such as limestone, shale, and sandstone, shaped by glacial movements.

Above the treeline, the alpine tundra is characterized by low-growing plants adapted to harsh conditions, like lichens, mosses, hardy grasses, and dwarf shrubs. Below the tundra, the subalpine forests are dominated by coniferous trees such as spruce and fir. In the riparian zones along rivers and lakes, is lush vegetation that contrasts with the surrounding tundra. These areas are vital habitat for wildlife, offering food and shelter, and playing a crucial role in the local ecology.
Outdoor adventurers might encounter caribou, moose, sheep, and grizzly bears. Birdwatchers will enjoy sightings of golden eagles, peregrine falcons, wild ptarmigans, and various songbirds that reside in the park, with others migrating through annually.
Tombstone is renowned for excellent hiking, with trails that cater to all levels of hikers, from beginners to seasoned trekkers. One of the most popular routes is the Grizzly Lake Trail, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and tranquil lake. Another notable trail is the hike to the top of Mount Monolith, providing panoramic vistas. The unspoiled wilderness also makes it ideal for backcountry camping, with several designated campsites available.
The breathtaking scenery and abundance of animals make it a prime location for photography and observation, with all four seasons offering different perspectives of sheer beauty. The park’s remote location means minimal light pollution, with clear skies allowing for excellent stargazing. Northern lights are often visible in fall and winter months, adding a magical touch to an already brilliant night sky.
Local history adds another layer of intrigue to Tombstone Territorial Park. The region has been inhabited by Indigenous peoples for thousands of years. Their traditional knowledge and stories provide a deeper understanding of the land and its significance. Today, efforts are made to respect and incorporate Indigenous perspectives and values in the long-term management of the park.
Tombstone Territorial Park stands as a testament to the natural beauty and ecological diversity of the Yukon Territory. It’s a remarkable destination for those seeking to connect with nature in the grandeur of some of Canada’s most pristine wilderness.
