There’s no question we are living in tumultuous political times. While nobody can predict what the future holds, one thing for certain is this – Canadians need to ‘buy Canadian’ more than ever before. We need to do it however we can, whenever we can. It is up to every one of us to support Canadian businesses and entrepreneurs.

This goes for travel, too. Canada is a vast country with an abundance of regions to explore. More than ever, it’s important to keep vacation spending here at home. In addition to helping our own economy, here are additional reasons to commit to traveling within our borders.

Canada is home to some of the most diverse natural terrain in the world. Our incredible wilderness features everything from jagged mountain peaks, to rugged lakes, rushing rivers, towering waterfalls, and meandering coastlines. We are home to dense forests, sandy deserts, wide-open prairies, and sprawling tundra. We have 37 national parks, 11 national park reserves, and more than 1,100 provincial parks scattered from coast to coast to coast. Our beautiful country has landscapes for every kind of nature enthusiast, and endless opportunities for outdoor adventures.

For travellers who prefer urban spaces, we have those, too. Major metropolises such as Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver have become vibrant cultural hubs of art, music, and fashion. They, along with many other Canadian cities, host world-class events each year that attract global crowds looking for exceptional entertainment and dining experiences.

One of Canada’s greatest strengths is its cultural diversity. We’ve become known as a cultural mosaic, starting with the First Peoples of North America, to the early settlers from France and Britain, to immigrant populations who have come here from all around the world over the past two centuries. Our amazing food scene reflects this unique multicultural makeup, with authentic international cuisine, innovative culinary fusions, and locally-sourced homegrown dishes. Foodies will fall in love with Canada, no matter where they visit.

Of course there are countless charming locales and rural regions that offer quieter, more laid-back travelling experiences. Whether you’re seeking a coastal village, a picturesque lakeside town, or a cottage in the woods, there are plenty of picture-perfect spots for peaceful getaways, stargazing, and – if you’re lucky with the timing – northern lights viewing.

Whatever your favourite season, Canada’s got you covered with all four of them. Each distinct season offers its own beauty, whether that be the blooms and blossoms of spring, the lush greenery and flowing waterways of summer, the brilliant colours of changing leaves in autumn, or freshly fallen sparkling winter snow.

The general warmth and welcoming nature of Canadians make traveling here an enjoyable experience. While Canada is not a perfect country, we Canadians are renowned for being friendly and polite. Canada is also considered one of the safest countries in the world, with lower crime rates than other places. This peace of mind allows travelers to feel good about exploring the surroundings without the same level of worry that might come with travel in other countries.

An avid traveller myself, I plan to stay away from the United States and am committed to making new memories right here over the next year. Or two. Or four. I’m committing to ‘buying Canadian’, keeping my vacation spending right here at home, and falling in love all over again with this country we call Canada.
