Soccer player hopes to get his kicks in

Local soccer player Kyle Hiebert will be travelling to Newfoundland later this month as a member of the Manitoba-Saskatchewan team that will compete in the national all-stars competition.

Hiebert, a 15-year-old midfielder, is one of 15 Manitoba players who will comprise the team, which will also include four players from Saskatchewan. The Sask-Toba squad will gather together on July 15, two days prior to the start of the national all-stars competition, which wraps up July 21.

The tournament will also feature representatives from B.C., Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic region.

The Sask-Toba team will be part of a group that includes B.C. and Ontario, meaning that it will have to beat one or both of the powerhouse squads in order to move on in the tournament.

It’s shaping up to be a busy soccer season for Hiebert. In addition to the all-star team, he is member of three other sides.

This isn’t his first time he will be competing in a tournament far from home. He has played in tourneys as far away as Nebraska, Iowa, Minneapolis and Edmonton.

Hiebert has been playing soccer since the age of two. He plays or practices nearly a dozen times each week. He says his ultimate goal is to play professional soccer.

A fundraising campaign to build a proposed new community centre is expected to begin this fall.

There will be a silent donor/corporate phase before the actual fundraising begins. If that portion of the campaign turns out well, a public campaign will be launched.

There is a good group of eight members on the fundraising committee,which is being head up by Gary Romyn. Committee members are still trying to determine a target figure, which will depend on what kind of proposals are considered.

Initial plans for the new facility call for a complete redesign of the fields, a meeting room, a multi-purpose centre, a new outdoor hockey rink that could be used for court sports in the summer, a fitness centre, and a gymnasium/hall with a divider and sound system that could be rented out. It is expected to have about 17,000 square feet of space with parking for 280 vehicles.

A number of other ongoing community fundraisers will continue as usual including the La Salle Charitable Golf Tournament (Aug. 31), the Fall Festival, a spring social and Breakfast with Santa. There is also a possibility of new events being created.

The new community centre will accommodate a growing town with increasing demand for sports.
