On Aug. 20, the Transcona Public Library, along with a very enthusiastic crowd of its youngest patrons and their parents/caregivers, welcomed Jake Chenier.
The special event was a wind-up to the library’s 2013 Summer Reading Club, which began June 24.
The Summer Reading Club was put on by the Winnipeg Public Library in conjunction with the City of Winnipeg, the Friends of the Winnipeg Public Library, the Winnipeg Goldeyes Baseball Club and TD Canada Trust/Toronto-Dominion Bank of Canada.
The club encourages kids to read for the fun of it, to improve their reading skills and to reduce summer reading loss.
Over the summer season, the Transcona Public Library hosted a variety of special events and programs geared towards children aged 3 to 12 and their families. For example, on Aug. 15, the Transcona Public Library held its Family Literacy Fun Day.
The Transcona Public Library is now looking ahead to its special, pre-school-aged programming, which begins in late September and concludes in late November. Registration starts Sept. 13.
Time for Twos (for little ones aged 24 to 36 months plus parent/caregiver) will be held Fridays at 10:30 a.m. (sessions are approximately 20-30 minutes in length).
Pre-School Story Time (for 3 to 5 year olds) will be held Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. and/or Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.
Story Time is a 30-minute creative presentation of books, action rhymes, finger plays and felt stories for children who are ready to be on their own in a group. A different theme each week provides a fresh introduction to high quality picture books.
Registration for the winter sessions will be held Jan. 17, 2014, while registration for the spring session starts on March 14.
Pre-school programming is led by Darrell Boguski, children’s librarian — who is affectionately known as “Mr. B.” by many Transcona residents.
To quote a Transcona resident, “our library is a comfortable place for us all to learn and to grow at every age and every stage of life. The staff is so helpful. Our library an integral part of our community of Transcona. “
The Transcona Public Library is located at 111 Victoria Ave W. Drop in and visit.
After all, as Dr. Seuss said: “The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
