St. Vital woman opens unique business

A businesswoman with deep St. Vital roots has started a new venture to help people become smooth.

Lindsey Peterson attended Collège Jeanne-Sauvé and opened Nude Sugar Bar about two months ago. Peterson says the business is Winnipeg’s first sugaring bar.

“That’s all the sugaring technicians do all day. Their time isn’t split so their focus is the best hair removal possible,” Peterson says.   

Sugaring is a form of hair removal. The technicians use an all-natural product made of only sugar, water and lemon.

“If you know that you don’t have problems with those products then you’re going to have no adverse reaction to this service. When you’re getting waxed there’s toxic chemicals in that, so you don’t know how you’re going to react,” Peterson says.

Peterson says Nude Sugar Bar is ideal for busy people who want a guarantee of quality and cleanliness but don’t necessarily want to go to an upscale, high-priced salon. Services are open to women and men and walk ins are welcome. The sugaring bar also has flexible hours evenings and weekends.

Peterson says the inspiration for Nude Sugar bar came from personal experience.

“Places I got my nails done, I didn’t feel comfortable getting sugared there but then also being a young professional I didn’t have the money yet to go to the high-end spas and be paying a large price to get this service done so I wanted to make this middle ground,” she says.

Peterson worked in marketing and new media in the fashion and media industries before starting her own business. When you walk into Nude Sugar Bar at 651 Corydon Ave., her fashion background is apparent. The clean white walls and stylish accessories give off a hip, friendly and comfortable vibe.

Peterson’s signature style is carried over to the business’s Instagram @nudesugarbar.

Two sugaring technicians work at Nude Sugar Bar. They use Sugar of The Nile, which is made in Winnipeg. The technicians have seven years of experience between them and they have completed training with Sugar of The Nile.

There are two private rooms at Nude Sugar Bar.

Another motivation for Peterson to start a new business: making Winnipeg the kind of city she wants to live in.

“I always thought I was going to move away to a big city,” she says and, in fact, she did move to Toronto at 18. After returning to Winnipeg and graduating from the Creative Communications program at Red River College she decided she wanted to make Winnipeg a place she and other young Winnipeggers wanted to stay.

“The city is now turning into such a cool and vibrant place and there’s so many local businesses by such smart and unique young individuals that it’s really inspiring to now be a part of that community,” says Peterson.
