Ray St. Germain, The Shoes to play museum fundraiser

 Circle Sat., April 2 as the date to join two of St. Vital’s musical legends — Ray St. Germain and Bill Wallace — in concert at the Travelodge Winnipeg East in support of the St. Vital Museum.

 The St. Germain family has been part of St. Vital since 1830 with the arrival of Joseph, who married Marie Cadotte in 1833. St. Germain School is named after Ray’s grandfather Simon, who in the 1930s sat as a St. Vital councillor.

 Ray has won so many awards he had to add wallspace in his home on which to hang everything. Born in St. Vital in 1940, Ray is still in demand across Western Canada. On Saturdays he’s a host on the Métis Hour X2 on NCI Radio from noon until 2 p.m.

 Ray has hosted 600-plus TV shows and has donated his time to entertain Canadian troops posted in Germany, Israel and Cyprus. He was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in 2010 and has been inducted into the Aboriginal Order of Canada.

 Wallace, meanwhile, began his musical career in the 1960s with Winnipeg band Gettysbyrg Address before playing with the Logan Avenue Comfort and Dianne Heatherington and the Merry-Go-Round. He then joined friends Kurt Winter and Vance Masters in Brother, and the trio co-wrote the songs Bus Rider and Hand Me Down World (later recorded by The Guess Who).

Bill went on to join The Guess Who, and played and co-wrote Clap for the Wolfman, which was a No. 4 hit in Cashbox Magazine and reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1974. He was also a part of the band during its reunion tour of 2000 and 2001.

These days Wallace fronts his own band The Shoes, which also features his wife, Deborah Wallace, on keyboards and vocals, Greg Gardner on drums and singer/guitarist Laurie Mackenzie, who, until last summer, was lead guitarist with the current version of The Guess Who.

A tribute to women’s hockey in St. Vital is now on display at the museum. Drop by any Saturday between 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. and take a look-see at the photos, jackets, and trophies. There’s even a photo of an undefeated Glenlee team from the mid-1950s.
