Albert Einstein once said “The only thing that you absolutely have to know is the location of the library.”
There are 20 branches of the Winnipeg Public Library located throughout the city. The Transcona Public Library is located at 111 Victoria Ave. W. in the heart of old downtown Transcona.
It is the mission of the Winnipeg Public Library “to enrich the lives of all Winnipeg citizens and their communities by providing high quality, responsive and innovative library services.”
Library cards are free for residents of the city and they provide access to a vast collection of books, audio-books, magazines, films, video games, electronic resources and more. The Winnipeg Public Library also offers a spectacular variety of programs and services for all ages.
The Transcona Public Library, in particular, is a place of literacy, of lifelong learning and discovery. It is a quiet, comfortable place with supportive staff and it is a hub of the community, a vibrant meeting place.
Programs now available at the Transcona Public Library include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Baby Rhyme Time, Time for Twos and Story Time — Young children enjoy picture books, songs and puppet shows as they get ready to become readers. Sessions are held one day or evening a week. Springtime pre-school programming runs April 10 to May 29.
• Tween Book Club — Students read and talk about awesome books, make friends and have fun. Sessions are held one evening a month.
For more information on programs such as these and to register, contact the Transcona Public Library at 204-986-3950.
Also see the Winnipeg Public Library website at wpl.winnipeg.ca/library/ and be sure to pick up a copy of the printed newsletter At The LIBRARY, a very useful guide to all the news and programs of the library.
Construction of the new Transcona Public Library is anticipated to begin almost immediately with an expected completion date of 2018. The new facility will be modern and more spacious, with improved study and leisure areas. There will be an indoor Family Literacy Playground and an outdoor reading area.
The new library will be part of the Park City Plaza development at the corner of Transcona Boulevard and Plessis Road.
Finally, when visiting the Transcona Public Library, take a moment to appreciate the basswood tree just outside the main doorway as it was planted by library staff back in 1986 in honour of Transcona’s 75th anniversary.
