Don Amero – accomplished musician and family man

Three–time Juno nominee and full-time musician Don Amero has chosen to make a home for himself, his wife and their two young children in the heart of Transcona.

I asked what had brought them there. He explained that they have family in the area and a suitable house became available, so they bought it. He loves the area and said the neighbourhood is a good one for his children. Their neighbours are friendly and there are lots of parks nearby for the kids to play in.

I enjoyed Amero’s performance with Steve Bell at Elim Chapel on April 27. They sang beautiful songs and shared some amusing banter. The event was a fundraiser for the North End Family Centre to help complete renovations on the Centre’s new building.

Bell and Amero have written a song together, the soon-to-be-released Would You Let it Break Your Heart. It’s about looking back at history in order to move forward.  Proceeds from the song will be donated to the Centre.

Amero mentioned that Bell has been a mentor and friend for about 10 years. He said he looked up to Bell not only for his admirable stage presence but for his good advice.

As his career has progressed, Amero has been concerned about balancing his family life with being a touring musician. Bell told him that when he has to be away for six days, he always makes sure the next six days are spent at home. 

Amero’s musical style has been described as roots, with a bit of country and pop and he is a wonderful singer and guitar player.  To date he has recorded five albums (you can find them in iTunes, on Spotify, and his website). 

Amero grew up listening to country, as his parents were fans and he said he’s rebranding to more of a country/pop style. Since his music already has country undertones, it’s not a giant leap.

At the moment, he’s curious to find out how his fans will respond to the new music. He likes to write songs that have a positive impact, and says country songs are good for storytelling.
