Winter fun at Roblin Park

Hey there, time traveller!

Even though the last couple of months have been brutally cold, my husband and I still make sure we get outdoors for some activity.
Our main passion is taking our Wheaton terrier for her daily walks but we have ventured into trying activities that we haven’t done for awhile.
One of those is ice skating. While my husband can outskate me in a heartbeat (must be that growing-up-in-northern-Saskatchewan thing), one of our favourite places and close by to us is the Roblin Park Community Centre at 640 Pepperloaf Cres. in Charleswood. It boasts a beautiful outdoor skating loop and if there isn’t hockey going on there are also three skating rinks.
If skating is not to your speed, they also offer toboggan slides with carpets provided. Of course, their main sports activities are hockey (the main teams are the Polar Bears and the Winter Hawks), ringette and basketball. They host a winter carnival in January and offer a variety of activities including karate, aerobics classes, dance lessons and a host of children’s activities.
Volunteers are the backbone of the centre and if you’re interested, check out their website for volunteers required.

March is also Nutrition Month.
This year’s theme is Unlock the Potential of Food. Dietitians of Canada is highlighting the potential of food to fuel, to discover, to prevent (chronic diseases like diabetes), to heal, and to bring us together.
In February, Health Canada launched the new Canada Food Guide and it is meant to encourage us to incorporate more plant- based products, including fruits and vegetables, in your daily meal planning.
There is also a focus on drinking more water and cooking more of your own meals rather than eating out or purchasing ready-to-go foods.
You can download a copy of the new Food Guide and recommendations from the Health Canada website.
As a registered dietitian, I not only promote healthier eating but also physical activity. Checking out the Roblin Community Centre or any city community centre is a good start.
Happy Nutrition Month!
