Those who enjoy getting bargains on clothing or searching for vintage treasures will be pleased to hear that Transcona will soon be home to a new thrift store. The Mission Thrift Store is moving into the vacant building at 701 Regent Ave. that was previously occupied by Extra Foods.
The thrift store closed the doors at its McLeod Avenue location on March 30 in preparation for the move. Development of the new building is currently under way and the store is expected to open its doors soon.
The Mission Thrift Store is a non-profit organization, with all net proceeds going to Bible League Canada. This foundation distributes funds to third world countries to be used for literacy programs, the opening of new churches and Bible distribution. The partnership has transformed the lives of men, women and children in over 40 countries around the world. Bible League Canada has been in operation for 30 years and has 53 stores nationwide.
Except for the store manager and assistant manager, all positions at the thrift store are volunteer. The Mission Thrift Store currently has over 100 volunteer staff.
The primary reason for the move is that the store had outgrown its previous location. According to the manager, staff are excited as the new building is double the size. With over 17,000 square feet of floor space, the new location will allow the store to increase the number, as well as the variety, of items offered to its customers. The new building will also have more space available for storage as compared to the former location.
The Mission Thrift Store will be open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will be closed on Sundays.
Donations to the store can be made during regular business hours. Although most household items are welcome, the store will not accept televisions, mattresses or wall units.
The Mission Thrift Store does not have an incentive program for donations but it will continue to offer a loyalty card to its customers, who will receive a stamp for every $10 they spend. After acquiring 10 stamps and filling the card, customers will receive a discount of $10 dollars off their next purchase.
The grand opening date has yet to be confirmed although the plan is for the store to open sometime in the early spring.
See you there.
