Royalwood resident Dr. Kady Cissé is helping her patients take a bite out of anxiety while attending to their dental health.
Dr. Cissé opened Lumi Dental on March 1 at Seasons of Tuxedo, 1-655 Sterling Lyon Pkwy. with co-founder Dr. Christine Kveder. Lumi is Dr. Cissé’s second clinic.
She said her childhood experiences and family led her to practice dentistry.

“I am proud to be a first-generation Canadian,” she said. “My parents immigrated from Africa. I grew up in a very strict household and I had a sweet tooth. As a girl, I had fillings in all my back teeth. My dentist was amazing.”
In high school, Dr. Cissé had an interest in science but was also a people person. Her mother told her to pick a profession where she could find work immediately after graduation — as a doctor, dentist or pharmacist. Her sister was already in pharmacy, so she chose dentistry.
You could say that Dr. Cissé’s sweet tooth led to sweet success.
Following graduation, she spent 10 years with a large group office. It was always her dream to build a start-up clinic from scratch. She envisioned a space where patients would feel like they were walking into a boutique as opposed to a medical facility.
“I am the first entrepreneur in my family and a huge risk-taker. I’ve hand-picked everything, right down to the paint colour and furniture to create Lumi. I embrace the challenge,” Dr. Cissé said.
She appreciates having the flexibility to set her own hours, balancing career and home life with her two sons and husband, who is also an entrepreneur.
“It gives me great joy to see patients I met as teenagers bringing me their own children for treatment,” Dr. Cissé noted. Equally rewarding are the patients who start off shaking so badly with anxiety that she can’t work on them become relaxed and smiling.
“I’m not just fixing teeth, I’m building relationships,” said Dr. Cissé, who approaches dentistry with honesty and humility. “I am an empath. I can feel someone’s mood and their pain the moment they come in. It is a skill and a gift to communicate and connect with my patients.”
“When you do good work and treat people well, you can’t fail.”
Lumi Dental offers multiple services and is accepting new patients of all ages. Visit www.lumidental.ca or call 204-900-0161 for more details.
