Recognizing Platinum Jubilee medal recipients
In celebration of the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s accession to the throne, ML’s across Manitoba were given the opportunity to recognize individuals in their communities who have demonstrated a commitment to the betterment of life in our province. Honourees were given a Platinum Jubilee medal, designed specifically for the occasion, as well as a certificate signed by Manitoba’s Lieutenant-Governor.
It was an honour and a privilege to have been given this opportunity to recognize the work of many incredible people as part of this celebration, and I want to publicly recognize them here:
Herb Chanin – A St. James resident and Second World War veteran who served in Bomber Command, where he sank six German submarines. He was the only survivor of a group of 11 conscripts who went to war from his high school in Stonewall.
Connie Newman – A fierce and dedicated seniors’ advocate who has worked for many years to improve the lives of elderly people in Manitoba.
Ron Blatz – The long-term executive director of Discovery Children’s Centre, who has made exceptional contributions to the field of early childhood education in St. James and Manitoba.
Eddie Ayoub – A lifelong resident of St. James who has spent the last 15 years delivering free, world class arts and social programming to kids in inner-city Winnipeg.
Clayton Sandy – Recognized for his incredible contributions to advancing reconciliation with Indigenous people in Manitoba.
Scott Nolan – A west Winnipeg songwriter, poet, and producer of award-winning albums who has used his skills to support the rehabilitation of individuals who have been incarcerated.
Bruce Alexander – Served for many years as a trustee with the St. James Assiniboia School Division and continues to serve youth in our community as president of the SJASD scholarship fund.
Araceli Ancheta – Serves as president of Pinays Manitoba and is a leader with a number of other important organizations serving the Filipino community in Manitoba.
Liz Jackimec – A true west Winnipeg community champion who has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to improving the lives of children and families through her volunteer work with a variety of organizations in the West End.
I am truly grateful to all of these individuals for their service to the people of Manitoba. A big thank you to all of them for helping to make our province into a better place to live.
