My husband and I arrived in Barbados a month ago. We missed our vacation here for the past two years due to the pandemic.
Now we are back and very much appreciating this beautiful island.
After a month, we have settled into a lovely daily routine. We rise with the sun around 6 a.m. Mornings are cool and quiet. It is the best time of the day to walk or exercise.

The end of another beautiful day in Barbados
We meet in the sea around 8 a.m. The sea is warm, salty and clear. And yes, the water really is that amazing turquoise colour that you see in photographs.
The best part of our morning swim is the socializing. Each morning, we meet our group of friends and catch up on island and personal news. After two years of not visiting, we have a lot to talk about. Our friends reside in different provinces and we come together in Barbados each winter.
After our swim, we return to our apartment for a leisurely coffee and breakfast.
The afternoons are hot, so we tend to sit in the shade on our balcony. From there, we watch the diving birds catch bread crumbs midair. We listen to the parrot next door sing his songs. On occasion, we spot the monkeys running off with mangoes from the back tree. We read, do yoga, and relax.
Around 3 o’clock, we head back to the beach for a last swim and visit with our friends.
Sometimes we take in a happy hour at a lovely seaside spot and watch the sun sink into the sea waiting for the green flash
If it sounds like our days here are idyllic, it is because they are.
Once or twice a week, we break our routine. We will take the minibus into the capital, Bridgetown, to do some shopping. We also have some adventures during our stay. This year we watched the horse races, visited the Barbados Horticultural Society’s flower show, and shopped at local markets.
Barbados is beautiful. The flowers, shrubs, and trees are colourful. The fish, vegetables, and fruit are fresh. The people are friendly and there are many activities to enjoy.
At the end of our vacation each year, we consider giving up our apartment and discovering another winter destination. And every year, we choose to return to Barbados. There is a charm to this island that keeps calling us back.
Our final adventure will be a sunset cruise on a small catamaran with our friends. We will snorkel, swim with the turtles, and watch the sun go down over the ocean. The end of another beautiful day in Barbados. It is no wonder that we return year after year to this island.
