Waverley West residents honoured

I was recently invited to attend a Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee awards ceremony at the Legislative Building to celebrate the contributions of many Manitobans. The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal (Provincial) commemorates the 70th anniversary of the accession of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to the throne as Queen of Canada. The Queen lived a life of public service for 70 years, committing her actions and words to the people. The Province of Manitoba is recognizing 1,000 people for their service and commitment.

In my role as city councillor, I am honoured to work with many outstanding people who are working to improve the quality of life for the residents of the Waverley West ward, the city and the province. Some give time and money, some give less tangible gifts of love, hope and leadership.

The ceremony recognized the work of many but, in particular, three residents of Waverley West ward were recognized for their commitment to community and public service. I work with these residents on a weekly basis and know the countless hours of volunteer time and effort they put in and would also like to extend my congratulations and deep gratitude for their work.

Sandra Sukhan and Paramjit Shahi were nominated by the premier of Manitoba. Sandra volunteers on many different projects in the community and I was able to work with her on the establishment of a permanent office and programming space for Pembina Active Living 55-plus in the Whyte Ridge Community Centre. Her passion for older adults and cultural diversity has positioned Pembina Active Living for much future success!

Paramjit Shahi is a driving force in expanding cricket in Winnipeg. Cricket is an exciting team sport which literally unites people from countries where harmony often doesn’t exist. Cricket helps immigrants settle, make new friends and feel welcome in Manitoba. I continue to work with Paramjit on many other sport and recreation projects in the community, through his contributions at the South Winnipeg Community Centre.

Kim O’Hara was nominated by Obby Khan, MLA for Fort Whyte. I’ve seen Kim in action for almost a decade. Her contributions of time, creativity and effort at the Whyte Ridge Community Centre are outstanding – from organizing programs to writing grants to overseeing all kinds of renovations and even a spray pad installation. Her commitment to improving the quality of life for residents of Whyte Ridge and the surrounding neighbourhoods is so very appreciated.
