On Wednesday, April 26, it was my privilege to present a private member’s statement in the Legislature to honour Joe Potenza, a long-time resident of Red River North, for his outstanding contributions to the Grand Beach/Grand Marais community. Joe has over 40 years of serving the communities of Grand Beach and Grand Marais in various capacities. In the hospitality business he has operated both the Grand Beach Surf Club and now the current Potenza’s Restaurant and Bar. Potenza’s is a mainstay of the area, frequented by both residents and summer visitors. With the war in Ukraine, Joe felt a strong need to help the refugees from Ukraine. He has helped families find housing, employment, household goods, and food and he was instrumental in organizing a benefit rock concert at The Met which raised over $100,000.00 to assist Ukrainian refugees settling in Manitoba.
On May 2, I attended a ground-breaking event to announce upgrades and expansion of the facilities and services at the East Selkirk Water Treatment plant. Funding will be provided with a 50 per cent provincial cost-share of up to $3.25 million and the Water Services Branch will provide project management services on behalf of the R.M. of St. Clements. This new water and sewer project will improve the quality of life for residents in this community for years to come.
I was also pleased to announce $109,346.35 for community projects as part of our Progressive Conservative government’s Green Team funding. Our government is pleased to promote youth employment across the province over the upcoming summer season. The projects in our community are part of a total $9.6 million to support the Green Team program this year.
The organizations receiving funds are:
• R.M. of St. Clements – $9,604.65 (recreation);
• R.M. of East St. Paul $33,750 (summer youth employment);
• R.M. of St. Clements – $7,139.70 (Green Team);
• R.M. of St. Clements – $2,500 (tourism-heritage wing Interpreter);
• Albright Church – $14,533.05 (children/youth recreation project);
• Beaches of 59 – $22,926.15 (Green Team);
• R.M. of Victoria Beach – $8,481.60 (community safety officer program);
• Grand Beach Cottage Owners Association – $10,411.20 (Grand Beach Community Club).
I am thrilled that these funds will provide program support to so many local projects in our community. Our government is always pleased to support important initiatives like the Green Team.
I welcome constituents of Red River North to continue to access our constituency office either by email at rrnorthca@mymts.net or by telephone at 204-641-2107.
