Summer is almost here, and with the school year soon ending, many other activities are also winding up for the season. For the residents of East Elmwood, the end of spring could be a good chance to check out the programs that will continue throughout the summer and to plan how to become involved again once the fall comes.
East Elmwood Community Centre is a familiar place to many people. It opened in 2015 and has been at its current location of 490 Keenleyside St., after fire destroyed its previous building on Beach Avenue.
“East Elmwood Community Centre is more than a nice new building,” said facility manager Jessica Lemky. “It’s the heart of our community and allows for connection, growth, and community.”

Now’s the time to check out the summer programs at East Elmwood Community Centre and in the surrounding area.
Some members of the community might want to check out the possibility of dodgeball at www.dodgeballwinnipeg.com. For the spiritually inclined, the Gateway East Church holds meetings every Sunday at the community centre, with information available at www.gatewaywinnipeg.com/gateway-east.
In winter, it can be difficult for people to get enough exercise. The K. Saunders Tae Kwon Do Academy runs on Monday evenings from September to June for anyone age five and up. Details are available at 204-952-3176 or KSTA.academy@gmail.com.
Although many activities at East Elmwood C.C. will soon break for summer, others will continue throughout the year. Pickleball is available at various levels, and free play hours are options for children aged six to 12, if a parent attends the first session.
Summer is a good time for people to practise the skills that they have learned or to begin learning new ones. For anyone wondering what exactly pickleball involves, the warm months can provide the opportunity to learn more about this popular sport and to try to gain some basic skills.
Some activities are also just about to start at East Elmwood. Although registration for Little Sports Explorers Field Sports sessions has closed, opportunities to learn more about this program for children aged four to six and seven to 10 might inspire parents to look for the next chance to enroll their children.
“We’re here to serve our community and provide resources in various forms, whether it’s through programs, events, or simply a safe and welcoming space,” Lemky said.
Participants and volunteers know how important a place like East Elmwood C.C. can be.
