June is Filipino Heritage Month in Canada and celebrations of Philippine independence are just one of several events scheduled.
On June 9, the Seven Oaks (School Division) Filipino Employee Association (SOFEA) hosted its 10th annual Heritage and Independence Day Celebrations at the Judy Silver Commons in Maples Collegiate.
This year marked the 125th anniversary of Philippine independence and nationhood. On June 12, 1898, the island nation gained its independence from Spain, having been a Spanish colony since 1565. There were numerous revolts against Spanish rule over the years of colonization.

Over 300 students and adults participated in and attended this year’s variety show. Most of the performers were from schools in the school division and there was also participation from St. Joseph Workers School, Winnipeg Sistema students and Active Living Seven Oaks seniors.
Not surprisingly, one of the Philippines’ national folk dances, the popular, high-energy tinikling got a standing ovation.
“The celebrations are getting bigger, very diverse and enjoyable. I am looking forward to next year’s event,” teacher Jennifer Kasprick said.
After three years without an in-person event, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, organizers took the opportunity to celebrate the significant growth of the first Filipino bilingual program in Canada. Launched by the Seven Oaks School Division in 2018 with two classes, it has since grown to four classes.
The employee association also awarded plaques in recognition to Seven Oaks School Division leaders for their partnership and invaluable support of various educational initiatives.
“The event is not only about celebrating heritage and culture, it’s also about giving back. Part of the proceeds from the tickets will go towards supporting the students from impoverished areas in the Philippines through our annual school supply drive,” said Dr. Porfiria Pedrina, president of SOFEA
On a related note: the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival will be held June 24 and 25 at Maples Community Centre (434 Adsum Dr.) The street parade is June 24, commencing at 11 a.m. at Jefferson Avenue and Watson Street.
