Summer is here and I hope you are enjoying the nice weather. It has been great being out and about at events and on the streets meeting new faces and chatting about all that matters most to Fort Whyte residents.
With over a year under my belt serving as your MLA, I’ve been working hard to deliver results to the residents of Fort Whyte. I am pleased to share some of the important projects that are in the works and will help support our community:
Stronger communities
Fort Whyte MLA Obby Khan, Winnipeg South MP Terry Duguid and Coun. Janice Lukes (Waverley West) were on-hand for the opening of the new splash pad at Whyte Ridge Community Centre.
Since I was elected, over $800,000 has supported community projects through the Building Sustainable Communities (BSC) program, the Arts, Culture and Sport in Community (ACSC) fund and other special grant programs. Here are just a few of the projects that have received funding in the Fort Whyte community:
· The Fort Whyte Alive Foundation received over $250,000 to replace the roof on the Alloway Reception Centre and rebuild an accessible pathway to the FortWhyte Alive sailing dock;
· The Whyte Ridge Community Centre received over $122,000 for facility upgrades, building & grounds maintenance and summer camp leaders/facilities staff;
· Linden Woods Community Centre received over $50,000 for facility upgrades, new equipment, recreation and grounds maintenance, summer programming & their summer carnival;
· Transformation Community Church Inc. received $37,500 to build a community kitchen;
· The Canadian Multiculturalism Disability Centre received $10,000 for their multiculturalism night event.
Support for seniors
The Manitoba Government has created a new $12.6 million grant program that will assist eligible older Manitobans experiencing hearing loss to cover the expense of testing, fitting and purchasing new hearing aids. Applications are now being accepted.
Whyte Ridge splash pad grand opening
The Whyte Ridge Community Centre splash pad is officially open. This new, 3,000 square-foot, fully accessible splash pad is thanks to a $1 million partnership between the federal government, the Manitoba government and the City of Winnipeg. In addition to the splash pad, the project includes pathways, a seating area, benches, picnic tables, a bike rack and a shaded area.
Throughout the summer, stay on the lookout for my team and I out knocking on doors, attending community events (awesome barbecue in the works) and even more great announcements and good things to com.! As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns you and your family may have. I can be reached at 431-554-2214 or by email, obby@obbykhan.ca
