Women looking for a safe and inclusive space to find their inner dancing diva should check out Prairie Diva/M. Funk Dance Productions.

“As long as I can remember I have had a negative body image,” said Kelsey Copeland, a 26-year-old teacher. “And even after losing 80 pounds — and by most people being considered to be thin and in excellent shape — I was still struggling with my perception of myself.”

Wanting to push outside of her comfort zone, Kelsey signed up for a burlesque fusion class at Prairie Diva. It combines elements of burlesque, minus the striptease, with aspects of jazz and hip-hop dance set to upbeat and sultry pop music.

“I thought if I can get on stage in front of an audience in a bra, I can do anything! So, I signed up for the class and there was no looking back,” Copeland said.

Prairie Diva, which runs out of the Ted Motyka Dance Studio (460 Main St.), aims to inspire confidence, and empower adults of all ages, shapes and sizes.

“We want to motivate individuals to feel confident in their own skin and comfortable to strut their stuff in an inclusive environment where everyone is welcome,” said studio owner Meagan Funk.

Kelsey gained a lot more than self-confidence from the class.

“I made six wonderful new friends and more at the show,” she said. “I found I loved to dance in a way I hadn’t before. I found out that I can do things that scare me. I found an inclusive and safe space where everybody is considered beautiful. I found me.”
