Keeping our community safe together

Hey there, time traveller!

Summer is here and this season has typically seen an increase in property theft and vandalism in our neighbourhood.
I know this can be unsettling and stressful which is why I remain committed to continually addressing the issue both at a community and city-wide level.
Winnipeg Police Service and cadet patrols are regularly happening in our neighbourhood, especially during times of higher overnight activities. As a result, I have ongoing meetings with the Winnipeg Police representatives to review crime statistics, identify hot spots and the actions being taken in response.

You can protect your property by putting up fencing, installing lighting and trimming trees, bushes and hedges in your back lane.
Additionally, I believe the neighbourhood seminars, block association safety briefings, increased reporting options as well as the development of the Brighten Up Program, are having a positive impact in making our neighbourhood safer.
I have also been partnering with my city council colleagues to address the underlying factors that contribute to crime including housing, intervention services and working collaboratively with the other levels of government. While we have made significant strides, I know more must be done.
There is no easy solution, however, more support on these important issues is critical. As I committed during the last election, I am in the process of hiring a dedicated position as an additional resource for the ward to assist in crime prevention outreach, program development and delivery as well as crime statistics research.
We all have an important role to play in ensuring our community is safe for everyone.
A few simple things you and your family can do to protect one another and your homes include:
• Securing your property;
• Keeping in contact with your neighbours;
• Installing lighting and trimming trees, bushes and hedges in your back lane;
• Reporting any instances of crime to the Winnipeg Police Service through their online reporting form or by calling the non-emergency line at 204-986-6222.
If you are interested in other safety initiatives or have suggestions that would give you peace of mind, please contact our office at 204-986-5236
Together, we can make a positive difference.
