Riel

Hey there, time traveller!

Although we were only elected a few months ago, our provincial government has hit the ground running. We began by establishing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation as a statutory holiday, naming Louis Riel as the honorary first premier of Manitoba, working to fix our health-care system and taking concrete measures to make life more affordable. Our team campaigned for a government committed to open lines of communication with Manitobans. I’m proud to say we’re doing just that with a health care listening tour of front-line workers and the Budget 2024 survey.

The environment and climate action have been at the forefront of my work. I have had the privilege of collaborating with environment and climate change minister Tracy Schmidt on that file. I share her dedication to conserving Manitoba’s environment and reducing our province’s emissions. Together we are working on environmental initiatives that will ensure we do our part to address the climate crisis and make life more affordable for everyday Manitobans. This includes a geothermal heat pump program and signing a memorandum of understanding with the federal government and the Seal River Watershed Alliance. This agreement will move us substantively toward our commitment to protecting 30 per cent of Manitoba’s land and waters by 2030.

Work at the legislature has been busy, but making time for my community remains my top priority. I recently had the pleasure of connecting with the residents of Golden Links Lodge, where many Riel constituents live and receive care. I was also grateful to visit many of our community’s seniors’ residences and child-care centres to deliver poinsettias and mandarin oranges for the holidays. In the coming weeks, I’ll join some school parent advisory council meetings, where I look forward to hearing about the current challenges and opportunities facing our elementary schools.

As many of you know, I made a promise during the campaign to be available to all the folks of Riel. I am excited to announce that I will be holding our first coffee and conversation event at Double D’s Cheesecake and Coffeehouse (18-200 Meadowood Dr.) on Saturday, Feb. 24, between 1 and 3 p.m. for constituents to have a chance to speak to me over a cup of coffee. It would be my pleasure to hear from you about your family’s needs and our community.
