This year marks the 50th and 100th anniversaries of two notable community hubs in the Fort Garry constituency — Dante Day Nursery and the Earl Grey Community Centre. Beginning in 1923, Earl Grey is the second-oldest community centre in Winnipeg. Over 100 years ago, residents of Fort Garry united under a common goal – to create a space that would benefit their neighbourhood. Construction of their vision began in 1924 when the first skating rink and baseball diamond were built. Four years later, Earl Grey’s first clubhouse was established.

Earl Grey Community Centre has always placed high importance on the value of community, and its staff and volunteers take immense pride in their ability to do so. Through the centre, community members can participate in various sports, craft sales, fundraising events, movie nights, family dances, and senior programs for low to no cost. Their vision is to provide recreational programming to the Earl Grey community regardless of religion, ethnicity, income or ability. This is to ensure that the Earl Grey community is a rich environment to foster the growth of families; they are doing a remarkable job at reaching this objective.

Dante Day Nursery opened beside Earl Grey Community Centre in 1974. Caring for children ages 18 months to six years old, Dante Day Nursery has been serving the community with quality child-care for 50 years. The centre’s dedicated staff are what makes the nursery’s achievement possible. Their commitment to providing the best child care by leading with love and excitement has created a strong positive culture that has spanned generations. Dante Day Nursery would not have been able to achieve this milestone if it weren’t for all the incredible leaders, such as Maria Ursi, Frances McQuiggin – who celebrates her 50th year at the centre this year – and director Karen Webster.

To celebrate their respective anniversaries, Earl Grey Community Centre and Dante Day Nursery will host a family fun night on June 21. I strongly encourage all Fort Garry residents to come out and celebrate these incredible feats. I hope to see you there.
