Wildwood

Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 01/05/2024 (894 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.

It’s the time of year for dusting the bikes off and making a stronger effort for fitness (yes, I know there are admirable superheroes who bike through the winter months).

Those in the Wildwood area looking for a bike tune-up, among other repairs, could try Popeyes Cycle & Sports on Pembina. This shop, which deals with all things bikes (and cross-country skiing), opened in 2023. I experienced excellent personalized service when I picked up a helmet. Others have recommended this smaller bike shop owned by a biking champ.

Once tuned and helmeted up, I tend to head out with my bike from home. While it makes sense that many of us do the majority of our exercise close to home, it’s always fun to mix it up and explore other areas when time permits.

Anyone looking for a family-friendly bike route might want to try the Wildwood loop that meanders through Wildwood Park (all the houses face in, making the trail pedestrian/bike friendly) and down the quiet lane through the Wildwood golf course.

Stopping at one of the three playgrounds along the Wildwood Park trail portion might be an idea. Find a map of the 3.6-kilometre loop here: www.trailforks.com/route/wildwood-loop/

Want to go a bit further and maybe even try out that new e-bike? A longer, 17-kilometre route takes in Wildwood, Crescent Park, parts of the pathway beside Blue Rapid Transit, and Churchill Drive Park (see map, pictured).

Speaking about the longer loop, a biking pal says, “When I’m riding with a friend, we’ll go at a casual pace and always stop at the BDI (I can vouch for this). When alone, I set up my riding app and compete against myself. I’ll whiz past everything at full speed, even the ice cream!”

Whatever area you’re biking in, check out Winnipeg Trails & Maps (Winnipeg Trails Association) online to find the perfect bike route for your needs: winnipegtrails.ca
