Ever thought about how your daily actions impact the environment?

At the recent Climate Change and Sustainability Practices Panel Luncheon held by the Assiniboia Chamber of Commerce at the Assiniboine Park Pavilion, three inspiring panelists shared their insights: Brent Poole from BGP Environmental, Archie Pronger from Assiniboine Park Conservancy, and Josh Friesen from Dueck Builders. Leading the discussion was Christa Rust from Manitoba Green Advantage.

The luncheon focused on how each business actively champions sustainability in their daily operations. Panelists encouraged attendees to consider impactful actions for the environment at work or home. As Christa Rust passionately stated, “We each have a role to play,” emphasizing community-driven efforts for positive change.

Brent Poole of BGP Environmental underscored their approach: “Clean the water, use it responsibly, and return it to its source in a better condition than we found it.” He highlighted global concerns about water safety, noting that “one in three people globally cannot trust their water source.” This is not just a problem for developing countries. Communities right here in our province are under boil water advisories daily and left to live off cases of plastic. Water bottles are often not reused or recycled properly leaving an abundance of plastic sitting in landfills. The BGP team is working to reduce the issues on a global and local level as quickly as possible.

Archie Pronger spoke about Assiniboine Park Conservancy’s sustainability initiatives, including transitioning to electric-powered lawn care equipment which reduces noise pollution and is friendlier for both humans and park animals, along with other less noticed changes such as using carpet made from recycled plastic bottles collected within the park. He also noted that the park’s Kitchen Garden produces food used in the restaurants on site as well as helping to feed their animals. Many flower displays from The Leaf are repurposed throughout the park or preserved for future displays.

Josh Friesen, initially drawn to construction by a summer job, shared his passion for sustainability and educating clients on eco-friendly building options. He highlighted energy incentives in Winnipeg that boost home efficiency, urging gradual but meaningful changes for lasting environmental impact. He explained how their team has the privilege of meeting customers in their sustainability journey and providing education and resources to help move them one step further while they design their dream homes together.

Collectively, the panelists spotlighted Energy Manitoba’s resources, offering incentives for sustainable practices. Their collective message was clear: every action counts, no matter how small. The bottom line of the day, whatever you do, just start somewhere. Small actions are always easier to make than bigger ones, but the impact of many small actions make a significant impact. Doing your homework and picking out one small action gets the ball rolling. It becomes easier to develop sustainable habits when you start small and do your research, from there it is surprising how quickly you will have made way into larger changes.
