Celebrating All Saints’ 70th anniversary

I am filled with gratitude as I reflect on the recent celebration of the 70th anniversary of All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Church, a cherished community staple of our area. It was truly an honour to join fellow residents in recognizing the church’s deep roots and its unwavering commitment to preserving our Ukrainian heritage. Part of the anniversary celebrating included a display of pieces of the church’s history, such as wedding crowns, a gold-plated Bible, and a mitre (bishop’s headpiece).

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the volunteers who have contributed to the church’s success over the years. Joined by Agriculture Minister Ron Kostyshyn (on behalf of Premier Wab Kinew), and Winnipeg mayor Scott Gillingham, we enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared by kitchen volunteers. The Koshetz Ukrainian Choir’s performance was well received by all who attended. I would be remiss not to mention the speech by emcee Len Matiowsky, parish president, whose kind words for the people who support the various programs and functions of the church were a touching tribute.

Your dedication and hard work have fostered a thriving community spirit in Transcona, which was evident during the anniversary event. As we gathered, we were reminded of the church’s journey, which began in 1923 with borrowed spaces and a handful of families, evolving into the vibrant congregation we know today. The church has been the setting for baptisms, weddings, and funerals, and is where songs were sung, meals shared, and dances performed.

Throughout my time in this wonderful community, I have witnessed first-hand the invaluable role All Saints plays in the lives of many. Carrying on in its tradition of compassion, this fall will mark the start of their new outreach programs, which provide meals to those in need, and will offer language classes that will either immerse youth in the Ukrainian language or create a supportive environment for newcomers learning English. The church has become a safe haven for countless individuals and families. It stands as a testament to the resilience and spirit of our community.

I am deeply passionate about supporting initiatives that promote community well-being and cultural preservation. All Saints not only nurtures our traditions but also actively engages with the needs of those around us, reinforcing the bonds that unite us as a diverse and inclusive community.

As we look to the future, I am excited to continue advocating for programs and initiatives that uplift our community and celebrate our rich cultural heritage. Together, we can ensure that All Saints remains a vibrant part of Transcona for generations to come.
