Two more important renovation projects are underway at the Whyte Ridge Community Centre, thanks to funding from Manitoba’s arts, culture, and sport in community fund, as well as Waverley West councillor Janice Lukes and Winnipeg’s land dedication reserve fund. It’s been several decades since the two outdoor hockey rinks have received a face lift, and skating this winter will occur in a much nicer space.
The west rink was part of the first construction that occurred at Whyte Ridge C.C. in 1996, in conjunction with the main building. Initial plans called for a basement for the building, but groundwater issues precluded that, owing to risks of flooding. The east rink was constructed in 2001, as part of the initial phase of grounds development, which included the south soccer field and later the north soccer field and play structure.
The centre’s main building was renovated in 2021, so the timing is good to update the adjacent rinks. Building renovations included converting one of the changing rooms to a meeting room, some of the open space into a small office, replacing the hockey viewing windows, repairing stucco from puck damage and a new coat of exterior paint to freshen up the building.
Plans for the rinks have always been mindful of year-round activities, beyond winter skating, and the east rink is asphalted to maximize opportunities. Options considered for the west rink have included sand volleyball courts, and the rink was used as an off-leash dog area over the past few years, although this may be moved to an area at the north end of the property. Options for the east rink have included a movable basketball hoop (to accommodate overflow from the adjacent basketball court), a tennis court, and a skateboard park with removable structures. Recently, pickleball courts appear to be a successful choice.
It’s great to see continued effort to make the Whyte Ridge Community Centre a comfortable place to meet your neighbours and have some fun. Speaking of efforts – there are still several board positions opens, including those for director of special events and director of fundraising. So come on out and help to make the place a fantastic centre of the community – current president,Chirag Pathania , would love to hear from you at president@whyteridge.ca
