Feeling secure and protected in our neighbourhoods is a cornerstone of the values we share in River Heights-Fort Garry.

Over my years as your representative at City Hall, you’ve been clear that community safety is a top priority for you. You expect solutions that work and dedicated resources that ensure that law enforcement is there when you need them.

I’ve been proud to advocate for programs and policies centred on personal and neighbourhood safety in our area and throughout Winnipeg. We’ve also worked together on successful local programs, such as Brighten Up, that added lighting to our back lanes with the goal of reducing dark areas where crime is more likely to occur.

Another key partnership that makes our ward safer is our work with the Winnipeg Police Service. I continue to be grateful for the dedication of the officers that protect our streets and help us understand the ways we can help them keep us safe.

I was happy to see many of you at last week’s community safety presentation on securing homes and personal property at Fort Garry Community Centre. Your presence and commitment to our collective peace of mind means so much to me, and is a crucial element to creating neighbourhoods in which everyone is working together to keep us safe.

Another way you can get more information about how you can protect yourself, your home and others is by signing up for E-Watch, the WPS’ crime prevention education and safety awareness initiative. The e-newsletter’s goals are two-fold – keeping you informed about recent break and enters and vehicle thefts in your area and providing you timely crime prevention tips on matters that are happening in our community. You can find more information and sign up at winnipeg.ca/police/crime-prevention/e-watch.

If you have ideas on how we can create safer communities, I want to hear from you. Please contact our office at 204-986-5236 to let me know how we can work together continue to make River Heights-Fort Garry the neighbourhood we all love to spend time in.
