Happy I Love to Read Month! I look forward to visiting our kids at school every year – it’s a privilege to join them, crack open a book and enjoy great stories together.
Last year, I had the chance to read a great piece of literature – Fluffy McWhiskers Cuteness Explosion – at Fort Rouge schools. It was a great moment as a father, because I got to identify a new bedtime story, and a profound one as the premier, as I got to encourage reading to a new generation. Being at our kids’ schools for I Love to Read Month, I am reminded again and again how important it is to give our kids a good start in life when they head to school.
That good start means making sure no child in our province goes to school hungry.

Nello’s Law, which will protect the universal school nutrition program, will enshrine the legacy of Transcona MLA Nello Altomare (above), the late minister for education and early childhood kearning, who died on Jan. 14.
That is why our government delivered on our promise to bring in a universal school food program – so every child in Manitoba has the food they need to learn. Together, with educators here in Fort Rouge and right across our province, we are feeding Manitoba kids and living up to the belief that every child matters.
This is how we can ensure more Manitobans are able to reach their full potential and go on to make our province an even better place. With this program, we are keeping kids from slipping through the cracks – now, they’re coming back to school day after day, to learn, to eat and to build a positive future.
As we keep working to deliver on our promises this year, we will enshrine our school food program into law – Nello’s Law. In this, the legacy of Transcona MLA Nello Altomare, the late minister for education and early childhood kearning, will live on. Nello’s Law will help Manitoba kids today and for generations to come. This is a legacy his family and his community can be so very proud of.
Together with Nello, parents and teachers and Manitoba, we are making it easier for families to build a good life in our province.
