Restoring ER to Victoria Hospital

When the emergency room at Victoria Hospital closed in 2017, it hit South Winnipeg hard. Families were left without nearby emergency care. Seniors lost a trusted place. Other hospitals were stretched even thinner. As a former firefighter and paramedic, I’ve seen firsthand how every second matters when someone’s in crisis.

That’s why I’m proud to share that our NDP government is taking real action. We’ve invested to kick off the design and early construction of a brand-new ER at Victoria Hospital, along with a new Centre for Mature Women’s Health. This is part of our province-wide plan to restore and strengthen health care services.

And as of May 15, South Winnipeg has even more access to care, with the opening of a new extended hours primary care clinic at Victoria General Hospital. It will offer services evenings and weekends, helping people get care when and where they need it. And you can book your appointment using medinav.ca to avoid the wait.

We’ve also committed over $770 million in Budget 2025 to recruit, retain, and train health care professionals — the largest investment of its kind in Manitoba history. It’s about rebuilding trust in the system, supporting frontline workers, and bringing services back where they’re needed most.

We’ve launched a community survey and town hall with the WRHA to hear directly from you — residents, families, and health care professionals — about what this new ER should look like. Design work begins this year, and while timelines are still being finalized, this is a major step forward for South Winnipeg.

There’s still much work to do. And I’m committed to doing it — with our government, with frontline staff, and most importantly, with you. After years of cuts, we’re turning things around. And I’m excited about what we’re building — together.
