Lagimodière

Hey there, time traveller!

As MLA for Lagimodière, I am so fortunate my constituents have entrusted me to represent such a vibrant and growing community. I was elected by a geographical area in our province and this community is more nuanced than boundaries on a map suggest. There’s a diversity of people with a variety of goals and lived experiences that make up the community. I am no less complex than my neighbors and I’m fortunate to bring my experiences as a local resident, a Metis citizen, and as a member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community to this work.

In late May, I was able to introduce Bill 234, the Pride Month Act, to the Manitoba Legislature. This bill will officially recognize June as Pride Month in Manitoba. It’s an important step that shows how far we’ve come while also acting as a small safeguard against the backslide of rights, recognizing what we’re seeing in other jurisdictions. This bill sends an important signal to those looking for safety and opportunity that their provincial government sees and values them, and that we’re committed to building a world where everyone can flourish.

We’re collectively stronger when we can share our gifts with the wider community. The queer and trans community is uniquely positioned across societies. Regardless of where you go to school, work, pray, which sports you play, or which businesses you frequent, everyone interacts with members of this wonderful group. Ensuring opportunity and dignity for the community will lift all communities.

While June is often recognized as Pride Month, we also celebrate and recognize many other communities in June including Indigenous folks through Indigenous History Month. Pride and recognition of Indigenous experiences align quite well as there are important overlaps across these communities. It was a real highlight to recognize the work of the Bannock Babes, an important and inspiring collective of Indigenous drag performers who contribute to our province in so many ways. It was the first time drag artists were welcomed in the gallery and celebrated in the Legislature.

June is a time of growth, celebration, and transformation. Whether you’re showing up at a graduation powwow, attending community events for Pride, or cheering on at a convocation, I encourage you to show up ready for new experiences, thoughtful curiosity, and a want to be an empathic community member.
