June is grad season in the Louis Riel School Division.
It’s that special time of year when we recognize and celebrate the achievements of our students who have reached the end of their academic journey with us and are ready to embark on new adventures and challenges.
The celebrations begin with our annual graduation powwow — a tradition that began in LRSD in 2015 to honour the accomplishments of our Indigenous students. Over time, the event has grown to include a diverse group of graduates, including Indigenous, non-Indigenous, and especially newcomer students. Any LRSD students are welcome to participate in both the graduation powwow and the traditional commencement ceremonies at their schools. The powwow is a celebration of Indigenous culture, community strength, and diversity in our division. With drumming, dancing, and feasting, it brings everyone together in a spirit of joy and unity.

High school commencement ceremonies make for wonderful momenets, as nervous students in caps and gowns prepare to say goodbye to old friends and take the next steps into their futures.
Later in June, our high schools host their traditional commencement ceremonies. These are the moments we all know and cherish – nervous students in caps and gowns prepare to say goodbye to old friends and take those next steps into their futures; proud, teary-eyed family members capture every second with their cameras; heartfelt speeches are made by teachers, community leaders, and valedictorians; and, finally, the graduates get to celebrate by triumphantly tossing their mortarboards into the air as one final salute to their graduating class.
Bringing greetings on behalf of the LRSD board of trustees at convocation ceremonies has always been one of my favourite duties. It’s a great privilege to be invited to take a small part in such special moments.
So, here’s to LRSD’s class of 2025!
