New library at Garden City Shopping Centre

I’m thrilled to share some exciting news with our community — northwest Winnipeg is getting a brand-new public library!
After years of advocacy and planning, I’m proud to announce that on May 22, city council voted to add a 21st library to Winnipeg’s roster — without closing any existing branches. This is a major win for our growing and diverse community.
The new library will be located in the Garden City Shopping Centre, a hub in our community. It’s a place where people already gather — to shop, meet friends, and enjoy community life. Now, they’ll also be able to drop into a vibrant, accessible library space.

This location offers excellent accessibility. With ample parking, a major transit hub, and a covered mall environment, it’s ideal for residents of all ages and abilities. Whether you’re walking, biking, rolling, driving, or taking the bus, getting to the library will be easy and convenient — even in Winnipeg’s unpredictable weather.
Northwest Winnipeg is one of the fastest-growing areas in the city, with neighbourhoods like the Maples, Amber Trails, Garden City, Aurora, and Highland Pointe expanding rapidly. It’s also one of the most ethnically diverse areas. The new library will provide access to Winnipeg Public Library’s entire collection of diverse books and resources, reflecting the rich cultural fabric of our community.
Libraries are more than just places to borrow books — they’re community hubs. They are gathering places where people connect, learn, and grow together. That’s the vision we have for this new space: a welcoming, inclusive environment where families, students, seniors, and newcomers can all feel at home.
The library’s proximity to schools and daycares means children will have more opportunities to engage with reading and learning from an early age — something that benefits them for life. And with opportunities for outreach into the surrounding community, we’ll be reaching more people than ever before.
This project has been a long time in the making, and I’m so grateful for the support and patience of our residents. Our 21st library will be a fantastic addition to our community—and we’ll make it great together.
Thank you for your continued support. As always, reach my office at 204-986-5264 or devi@winnipeg.ca if you have any questions, comments or ideas.
