Celebrating the third annual Métis Market Day

On Aug. 9, I had the privilege of attending and bringing greetings to the third Annual Métis Market Day at the St Norbert Farmers Market.
This day was a chance for all attendees to reflect on the profound impacts of Métis people in our community and to share Métis culture and history across generations. Hosting the Métis Market Day here in St. Norbert holds deep significance for the Métis community as this is where Louis Riel created the provisional government that eventually became our beautiful province of Manitoba.
This Métis Market Day was not just a celebration of this proud history, but the continued strength and beauty of our nation. Seeing the jigging, music and beadwork and hearing the wisdom of our Elders and energy of our youth reminds us that our culture continues to thrive — and so does our spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation. Our ancestors were leaders in trade and pioneered the fur trade that helped build both our province and country, marking the strength and determination of our people. This strong entrepreneurial spirit lives on in our artists, food producers, and small businesses, and this spirit was felt throughout the market as the day went on.

As a proud Métis woman and small business owner, I hold this legacy close. I know just how much hard work goes into creating food and artwork that everyone can enjoy, and I could see just how much heart and passion went into the work of every vendor that was at this year’s Métis Market Day. Every year, it’s a privilege to come and see what the market has to offer, and our constituency is always proud to host this event. So, I would like to thank all the vendors and organizers who made this year’s event possible because this day would not be the same without you. Your passion and dedication to creating a welcoming space where everyone is included is so important to fostering a safe and unified community.
As we look ahead, we must continue to remember that our strength lies in unity and that we should all be continuously working to support and uplift our communities. I’m proud of my people and I’m proud to keep representing our constituency in the legislature. So, let’s keep gathering, celebrating, and standing with each other.
Maarsii. Merci. Thank you.
